    Body fat used to be measured using callipers, but today's devices are more sophisticated, and rely on a high-tech method called BIA (bio-electrical impedance analysis).

    Most are similar to normal scales - you stand on them in bare feet - others are hand-held. The monitor passes a low-level, imperceptible electric current through your body. Lean tissue contains mainly water (73 per cent) and electrolytes, which conduct this current.

    Fat, however, contains no water and is not a good conductor, so it impedes the current. By measuring your lean body mass, the monitor can predict your fat mass.

    For best results, the monitors should be used at the same time of day, once a week. Wear minimal clothing. You need to empty your bladder before use, as this will affect the results - avoid alcohol and using the device straight after exercising.

    A good device will not only be accurate in its readings, but consistent - so you can keep track of any changes in fat percentage. There are a number of models available.

    Some which measure not just body fat but even visceral fat (the dangerous fat around the organs linked to heart disease). But are they any good?

    novnov Gw baru baca success storynya loh nurunin berat badan, keren banget. Pas liat fotonya yg lagi headstand jadi mupeng deh. Body lo bagus novnov, gak kurus2 banget very sexy.

    Ikutan nimbrung ya, gw umur 28, tinggi 158cm dengan berat 48kg. Body fat percentage biasanya 21-22%, paling gede so far 23%. Gw ngukurnya pake timbangan digital aja sih, terus nimbangnya tiap bangun tidur dan telenji, hari ini nimbang berat turun 1/2kg dan body fat percentage jadi cuman 19%. Olahraganya mood2an, tp biasanya either bikram yoga or cycling karena gw gak suka nge-gym. Saat ini lg belajar push up karena pengen toned up

    Menurutku body fat percentage ini ukuran yg lebih penting dibandingkan berat badan terutama bagi yg dalam program weightloss. Aku sering liat di gym orang ngukur berat badan as soon as they get off the treadmill. It doesn't work that way. Yang mau kita babat kan lemak, sementara sehabis kita olahraga itu yg berkurang bukan serta merta lemak dari tubuh tapi air. Jadi berat badan itu bisa sangat-sangat menipu, dalam hal ini persentase lemak justru acuan yg lebih tepat.

    Setahuku nih ya, untuk menambah 1 pound lemak di tubuh kita perlu at least 3500 kalori. Jadi kalo kita mau membabat 1 pound lemak dari tubuh, kita perlu kalori defisit dari diet & exercise at least 3500 kalori. Dan ini cuma bisa terwujud dalam jangka waktu yg panjang, kita harus bisa memaintain kalori defisit ini month by month untuk mengurangi lemak tubuh. I think in order for someone to really see the effect of healthy weight loss it would take at least 1/2 - 1 year.

    I myself want to reach 20% of body fat percentage! Agak-agak ambisius karena sekarang-sekarang ini aku udah berhasil nyentuh kisaran 21.5% sementara setahun yg lalu aku masih di 22,5-23%. I'm already in a pretty good diet overall so it's just a matter of workout discipline at this point.

    Temans, barusan ngukur body fat pake web di page 1, kok hasilnya beda2 yah?

    Hasil perhitungan body fat: 27.26% (US Navy body fat algoritm) atau 51.67% (YMCA)

    BMI: 20.3
    Body Fat: 27.9%
    Lean body mass: 33.9 kg

    Kalo liat dari 3 web itu (dan timbangan digital), hasilnya kan beda-beda.
    kita ikut patokan yang mana kah?
    Supaya seneng sih daku pake yang paling kecil aja (22.69%)
    Bole ga sih?
    Atau harus ambil rata2?

    chantal, gue biasanya pake US Navy atau US Army. Jrg pake YMCA. Kalo 50% sih mah engga yah kayanya. Mungkin kalo consensus dari formula lain mengarah ke 27-an persen, ya segitu kali yah. Emang berbagai metode ini ada kekurangan dan kelebihannya. Yg kabarnya plg akurat sih pake BodPod, tapi gue ga tau disini dimana yg ada. Kelihatannya sih harus di semacam hospital gitu.

    chantal, mnrt dr yg gue baca2, yg optimal untuk weight loss itu dari 80% better eating and 20% exercise. Tapi kalo body fat nya udah mendekati fitness level (yah sekitar 25-26% kali yah, kan fitness level 21-25% for below 40 yo), IMO emang hrs di intensify exercise nya dan tambah dgn lifting weights. Jd kurangin makanan berlemak sih menurut gue ok aja dijalanin.

    lavennia, jgn menyerahhh... Gue mulainya jg 30-an persen kok. Ayo semangattt ajaaa... Ntar kalo mulai eat better dan exercise, trs ada progress (dan pasti ada progress kl jalaninnya bener), bangga deh bisa ngomong, dulu gue sgini, skrg bisa segini, heheheh... Yg penting let's do something! Mudah2an dgn nyari tau our own body stat, bisa jd motivasi kannn...

    Wulaaaan, dari 2 body fat calculator di page one mu, body fat gw berkisar antara 30.28-30,3. Hiks gw baru aja ngitung ukuran perhari ini, padahal udah turun 4 kg, sblmnya berarti lebih banyak lg hiks, harus dikencengin nih work outnya biar bisa meraih angka bodyfat minimal 25 dulu nkh

    Pappi, gapapaaaa... Biasanya di initial phase nya weight loss, pertama kali baru water weight aja. Apalagi kalo dicampur olahraga, krn glycogen storage kamu depleted. Tar abis water weight, baru fat. Pasti turun kok ntar, asal konsisten aja.

    mrs chic, gue ada app namanya 'Fitter'. It's free but I can't say it's the most accurate. Ada BMI, BMR, Body Fat dan WHR calculator.
